Our Process
It all starts with a relationship.
Every landowner has a different set of priorities for their land. Getting to know these is our first step to a quality timber harvest. Once we understand your goals, we create a harvest plan with you and sign a timber contract. Terms of payment are detailed in the contract. Weekly payment once logging begins is most common, although lump sum payment is also an option in some cases.
Next, we find and mark the exact property corners and lines. For a single-tree selection harvest, we select and mark the trees to be cut. (This step isn’t necessary for diameter limit cutting.) Then we lay out and construct roads and landings.
When logging begins, we harvest trees using the best techniques of directional felling, precisely guiding each tree to ensure the least possible damage to the residual stand. Stumps are cut low to the ground, limbs are trimmed flush to the trunk and logs are measured out and marked for their highest market potential. We remove tops where no longer merchantable and leave them to decompose on the forest floor, returning valuable nutrients to the soil. Using a rubber-tired cable skidder, we drag logs to the landing, taking special care to avoid damaging remaining trees or creating ruts.
Once on the landing, we will buck the logs to length and sort them into various products based on grade, size and species. The timber is loaded and hauled to market on our self-loading truck and pup trailer. This configuration allows for small, low-impact loading areas dispersed throughout the tract. By hauling your timber directly to the mill we eliminate the use of field buyers and expensive outsourced trucking cutting into the profit. When the harvest is complete, roads and landings are protected against erosion in accordance with Arkansas best management practices.
